LIBRARY AND MUSEUM

The Institute of the Deaf of Turin has always had a well-stocked specialized library on deafness, born in the early years of its foundation, especially as a service for the teaching staff of the schools of the Institute itself.

The library has always been kept up to date, as evidenced by some cataloging attempts made in the past; in this way his book patrimony has gradually been enriched with documents, including course notes, special teaching manuals, audiology essays and any type of publication concerning deafness.

In 1999, a first reorganization of the volumes and magazines began, also concentrating in a single room the books kept in various parts of the Institute.

From an initial analysis of the preserved materials, the great wealth and importance of the book collection immediately emerged, in particular as regards the oldest part of the library.

The stored material mainly consists of:
- essays and manuals on pedagogy and deaf rehabilitation;
- magazines and specialized newspapers, both extinct and still published, which count more than one hundred periodicals;
- specific articles taken from non-specialized magazines and newspapers;
- degree and specialization thesis on deafness;
- vocabularies of Sign Language, of which many are foreigners;
- laws, regulations and circulars on handicap;
- various paper materials such as flyers, course announcements, conferences, advertising of hearing aids.
